State Patrol Starts Annual Click it or Ticket Patrol Emphasis
YAKIMA, Wash--Troopers say it's really not about writing tickets, they just want people to be safe. Click it or Ticket is one of several patrol emphasis the Washington State Patrol does.
The Thanksgiving holiday is often the busiest time for our highways, which is why the patrol happens during the holiday season. Having the extra police cars on the road not only slows drivers down, it also reminds them to buckle-up, something that can save you or a loved one.
Troopers say there really isn't a good excuse for not using a seat belt.
"Some one might say, well you know I'm not hurting anyone, but myself. Well you are important to somebody so in essence yes you are," said Sgt. Devyn Derrick, WSP.
Sgt. Derrick said almost all serious injuries he sees are preventable with the use of a seatbelt. By using your seatbelt correctly it reduces the risk of injury or death by about 70%. That's why law enforcement across the state will be helping with this effort.
All the extra work makes these patrol emphasis highly successful, Washington has the highest seatbelt usage in the country.
