YAKIMA--When Davis High School students learned how much waste they create just while at school, they decided to try to clean some up.
Students were collecting recyclable items in the parking lot of Davis High for three hours Saturday at the Davis Recycle-A-Thon.
They wanted to collect 10,000 pounds, about 2,000 more than the last Recycle-A-Thon in February.
The Davis High School Leadership Class organizes the Recycle-A-Thon. This year, four Davis High seniors are leading the charge as part of their senior project. They hope to change attitudes and make a lasting difference.
"It's not like a loser thing it's something that we have to do. We wanted to offer some way to do it."
The dumpsters were nearly filled just an hour into the Recycle-A-Thon. This is the third time Davis students have worked to make the community greener. This year they also gave out reusable grocery bags to the first hundred recyclers.
