Hoppes, TC Prep roll into State Quarterinfals

Posted: Updated:
PASCO, Wash. - The State Playoffs continue this weekend and the Tri-Cities Prep football team has never been hotter. They've averaged 69 points over their last two games, both wins. They are 10-1 heading into Fridays State Quarterfinal game against Cusick. That game is Friday night in Newport.
By the end of Friday's game, junior quarterback Will Hoppes will most likely own four career state records: passing yards, total yards, completions and touchdowns. Already this year he set a single game state record with 639 yards passing and also 756 total yards...in one game! How do they do it?
When you run a spread offense in eight-ma football, things are VERY spread out.  Put a guy like Hoppes at quarterback and it adds up to a lot of scoring.
"We're similar to Texas Tech," said Coach Dan Whitsett. "We spread the field and we try to we send people to different parts of the field. It makes the defense cover the whole field."
Things have really opened up for Hoppes. "There's no free safeties," he explained. "There's three less guys trying to tackle you. When you get out on the outside, it's man-to-man. If of you're a better athlete, basically just throw the ball up there. These past couple of weeks it's been really fun. It's really been flowing."
Whitsett says the fact that it's 8-man doesn't take away from Hoppes amazing accomplishments. T.C. Prep made it to the state semifinals last year.
