Preparing Your Car for the Winter from Yakima Tire Expert
YAKIMA, Wash. - With winter arriving soon, many drivers will want to buy chains for their cars to prepare for the road conditions that come with the changing of seasons. Local tire experts say there are important factors to consider when preparing for the winter weather.
Lucas Pruneda is the assistant manager at Commercial Tire, he suggests getting help to identify which chains are right for you. Pruneda also says drivers need to remember with chains you have to adjust the way you handle your car.
"Speed is probably the biggest factor on the chains, you don't want to go over the suggested speed on your chains, most are 30 miles per hour."
He also says that when putting on chains, you should have a pair of gloves, make sure you have the emergency brake on, and that the car is stable on flat ground. It is best to practice putting on chains at home as well, he says.
Other important steps Pruneda recommends are checking your heater, anti-freeze and windshield wiper fluid levels. In your car, he says you should pack an emergency kit, blankets, and flares.
