President-elect's name suggested for K-8 school

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A Portland elementary school recently reconfigured as part of series of school closures and mergers is looking for a new name, and President-elect Barack Obama is on the list.

The school is now called Clark K-8 @ Binnsmead - and it uses the symbol for "at" in its name on the Portland Public Schools Web site.

The school's principal, Christine Aanderud, says students were excited about the possibility of naming the school after Obama, who just had an elementary school named for him in Long Island, N.Y.

But the president-elect has some competition from some other famous names, including Susan B. Anthony, Amelia Earhart, Margaret Mead, Cleopatra, Sacagawea and Shel Silverstein.

A committee will choose a list of finalists and the Portland school board will make the decision in April.
