WEST RICHLAND, Wash-- A West Richland police officer is recovering after being hit by a drunk driver Saturday night. Officer Scott Oak was just a block away from the police station, when he was struck by 35-year-old Shannon Sweet at the intersection of 37th and Everett Street just before 10 p.m.
Officers say the suspect's blood alcohol level was over twice the legal limit. Scott had just joined the West Richland police force.
"He's an experienced officer," says Sergeant Bill Leach. "He came to us from Missoula, Montana, Missoula police department. And just prior to coming to us, he returned from a trip to Afghanistan where he was working as a contractor training police officers over there. Got a lot of experience, great guy."
Sergeant Leach says he did speak with officer Oak Sunday, and says he's doing fine, just sore in the neck and back. Scott will return to work as soon as he gets medical clearance.
