New Train Underpasses will Help Ease Traffic and Promote Safety
YAKIMA, Wash.- The City of Yakima is close to adding an underpass on Lincoln Avenue.
City engineers have been working on drafting plans to help ease traffic going to and from the downtown area. The city has 80 percent of the funds for the underpass. They're just waiting to finish buying some of the property around the railroad crossing. A senior engineer says adding under passes could do more than alleviate traffic, it could save lives.
"There have been a couple of fatalities, so reducing the number of crossings will reduce fatalities and or other collisions," said Senior Engineer Bob Desgrosellier.
Engineers expect to get all the funds needed for this project by early next year. Construction should begin early spring. The next goal is to add an underpass on Martin Luther King Boulevard.
