Yakima Woman Leaves $20 Million For Local Students

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA--A Yakima woman leaves more than $20 million for Yakima Valley students.

Mary Davis passed away last week, but her gifts will live on.  She is leaving nearly $17 million to fund scholarships for local students, and close to $4 million for vocational students at Perry Technical Institute.

Her granddaughter says Davis always stressed the importance of education.

"To leave that money that she left and have it go where it's going was very important to her," Megan Rockwell said.  "She was very education-driven."

Davis' accountant hopes to start awarding scholarships by the 2010-11 school year.

The aid will be split evenly between males and females, and will be awarded based on need.
