Man Behind Downtown Yakima's Revitalization Resigns
YAKIMA--The man behind the recent revival of downtown Yakima resigns. He will be taking a position in Louisville, Kentucky.
Hawkins is going home. He is originally from Lousville, and he says his new job brings him back together with his family and girlfriend.
Hawkins has been working with the Committee for Downtown Yakima since January 2007. He has organized community activities on the first Friday of every month, and overseen several new hotels and businesses coming to Yakima.
Hawkins says his proudest achievement has been making downtown Yakima into a cleaner and safer place. He says all the progress the city's made makes it hard to leave.
"[We have] the foundation to make a great place and I think downtown Yakima is pointed that way," Hawkins said. "I hate to leave the momentum here in Yakima but there's no place like home."
Hawkins will be leaving at the end of January for a job with Block by Block. There he will work on reviving cities all over the U.S. The Committee for Downtown Yakima is putting together a search group right now. They hope to find Hawkins' replacement by April.
