Rental car companies feeling the squeeze

Posted: Updated:

Some rental car companies are feeling the squeeze of the economic pinch.

Car companies are keeping cars longer, closing off-airport rental locations and laying off employees to cope with a slowing economy.

Avis, for one, laid off 2,200 workers, about seven percent of its employees this month.

Hertz says it has laid off 2000.  And Advantage has filed for bankruptcy.

Analysts say the weak economy isn't the only thing that's hurting rental car companies.

Fewer fliers mean fewer rental customers at airports.  And companies have reduced business travel.
