YAKIMA--Most stores and restaurants are not open on Christmas but for movie theatres, it is one of the busiest days of the year as families flock to see the winter's best blockbusters.
Yakima Cinema on 16th Ave. was packed this afternoon, and employees expect it will be even busier tonight.
The movie industry is grateful that Christmas fell on a Thursday this year, it could help them make more money.
"Well Christmas Day is a pretty good day but what the movie producers, the studios are really interested in is it really launches a 4-day weekend for them."
With Adam Sandler and Tom Cruise among the headliners for today's new releases, theatres expect good crowds all weekend.
Carpenter said the theatre sold a lot of gift certificates on Christmas.
It might be a last resort for those people who did not quite finish their Christmas shopping.
