New Snow Creates Tough Road Conditions in Yakima, Passes
Snow from Sunday night into Monday morning made roads slippery in Yakima while the weather continues to limit access on the passes.
Yakima Police said early in the morning there were no incidents on city roads. But the new snow on top of the ice already there make it easy for cars to slide. Freezing rain was in the forecast for the early morning, likely to make conditions worse.
On I-82 there were no major incidents as of Monday morning, according to Washington State Patrol. They did report compact snow on the freeway though. Over on the passes, the situation was worse.
Road crews closed Snoqualmie Pass because of poor weather conditions while avalanche control continued. Eastbound traffic was being stopped at milepost 34 near North Bend and westbound traffic was stopped at milepost 84 near Cle Elum. Traction tires were required on White Pass and cars without all-wheel drive needed chains on Stevens pass, state patrol said in the morning.
Officials agreed anyone heading to work or school needed to give themselves more time and take it slow on the roads.
