Dry Winter Skin Needs Relief This Time of Year

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK,  Wash - This time of year the cold winter weather outside makes us turn up the heat inside our homes and offices.

"Your always colder in the winter even if the house temperature is the same, because the air is dryer and what we feel is the water evaporating off our skin and we receive that as cool." Says Dr. Raymond Sjerven from 8-8 Family Medicine.

Dr. Sjerven says he sees an increase of patients complaining of skin issues this time of year. "it's a lot of skin issues this time of year the eczema, the dry skin, the dermatitis, it's really bad this time of year.

Not only do people find their skin is itching more, but cracking and becoming very painful. "Dry cracking skin especially around the nails. they'll crack and bleed and become quite painful and people who already have skin conditions are terribly aggravated." explains Dr. Sjerven.

Wind, soaps and even taking hot showers can all contribute to dry itchy skin.   And applying moisturizer is your best defense from feeling the itch. "The expensive ones, the cheap ones, they all work" Says Sjerven.
