Qatar: How would the boats get there?

Posted: Updated:

In short, the Unlimited Hydroplane racing fleet would get to Qatar for the November, 2009 races by boat themselves.

ABRA said the boats would be loaded up onto a vessel at Houston, or a similar port, for a four week journey across the ocean.  They'd be off-loaded in Qatar and ready to race.  Because of the time it takes to transport them, the November date allows boats to complete the U.S. race sites before heading to the Middle East.

EDITOR'S NOTE:  Wow.  It sounds great to say "the U.S. race circuit"

It's happened in the past.  When the Unlimiteds raced in Hawaii, a similar method was used.

When the boats arrive, they can expect good racing conditions.  "The weather should be mid-to-upper 70's, or low 80's that time of year," said Dr. Ken Muscatel who recently toured the venue.

"The race will be the 3rd or 4th week on November," said ABRA's Sam Cole; "in conjunction with the Qatar boat show."
