Exercising Rain or Shine at the Yakima Valley Mall
YAKIMA, Wash. - Trying to get in shape in the new year can be hard if the weather doesn't cooperate so some residents look to the mall walkers program for a safe place to exercise throughout the day.
The Yakima Valley Mall opens its doors at 7:00 a.m. to walkers and lets them stay until 11:00 pm every day. This gives walkers a few hours at the mall to themselves in the morning and at night.
Karen Rice works for Yakima Regional Medical Center, is the mall walkers program coordinator. She says anyone can visit the mall to shop and walk, as long as they don't do both at the same time.
"In everyday walking, you don't usually walk with enough speed and consistency to get your heart rate up. So when you are doing dedicated walking your gonna be able to increase your heart rate which is going to improve your endurance."
One lap around the mall, passing through every inlet, totals half a mile. Walkers can tailor their route by adding stairs or bringing weights.
