Shelton One Of 17 Invitees To Mariners' Spring Training
SEATTLE (AP) - First baseman-DH Chris Shelton heads the list of 17 non-roster players who have been invited to the Seattle Mariners' spring training camp, which begins Feb. 14 in Peoria, Ariz.
Although Shelton is not on the Mariners' 40-man roster, he will come to Arizona with an excellent chance to make the team's roster based on his power numbers; 18 homers in 2005 and 16 in 2006, all hit while he was a member of the Detroit Tigers.
Shelton signed as a minor league free agent with the Mariners this winter. His career numbers include a .274 batting average, 37 homers in 904 at-bats, a .346 on-base percentage and 241 strikeouts.
The Mariners are inviting eight pitchers, three catchers, four infielders and two outfielders to join the regulars for spring training. Invited pitchers include Erik Hull, Chris Jakubauskas, Shawn Kelly, Luis Munoz, Chris Seddon, Denny Stark, Tracy Thorpe and Sean White.
Catchers Jamie Burke, Adam Moor and Luis Oliveros have been invited, as have three infielders in addition to Sheldon; Callix Crabbe, Oswaldo Navarro and Chris Woodward. Outfielders Freddy Guzman and Prentice Redman also have received invitations.
