Fatal Accident on State Route 97 is Being Linked to Alcohol

YAKIMA, Wash.- Friday's fatal accident near Toppenish is being linked to alcohol.

Forty-year-old Darla Atkins died after the car she was riding in lost control and hit another car on State Route 97 around 6 p.m. Friday night.

Troopers say the number of accidents on State Route 97 and near the reservation have increased recently and like in this fatal accident, the reason is alcohol.

"Most of it has to do with DUIs and are alcohol-related and also with people not wearing seat belts and the combination of these two," said Washington State Trooper Ryan Sauve.

Neither the drivers nor the passengers in any of the cars were wearing seat belts. State troopers have not identified who was intoxicated. They are continuing to investigate the accident.
