Walla Walla Labradoodle Owner Talks About Possible White House Dog

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.-- The Obamas moved into the White House Tuesday, but they don't have a dog yet.

They were thinking about either a Labradoodle or Portuguese Water Dog.

The Labradoodle is a cross between a Labrador and a poodle.  The Obamas are considering the pooch because it's known for being hypoallergenic.  The family says daughter Malia is allergic to many animals.

Local dog enthusiast and owner of two doodles, Adina Pearson, cautions that not all are hypoallergenic.  She says it depends on the genes or what generation the mixed-breed is, as well as what type of allergy a person has.  Some people are allergic to dogs' coats, or pet dander, or even saliva.

Pearson says a doodle would be a good fit for the White House as they're smart, friendly, and energetic, but she also worries the breed will become a trend if the Obamas get one.  She explains, "The downside of them choosing a Labradoodle is, most likely, a lot of people will start breeding more of these dogs, which will means more of these dogs in shelters.

The Obamas are also interested in a Portuguese Water Dog, which is an old breed, also known for being hypoallergenic.
