WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama says the nation should find common ground in the abortion debate so "our daughters have the same rights and opportunities as our sons."
Obama's statement Thursday to mark the 36th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade made clear the new president still supports abortion rights. But he also says the court's decision represents a broader government principle that government should not intrude on private family matters.
Obama says everyone needs to work to prevent unintended pregnancies, reduce the need for abortion, and support women and families in the choices they make. He says we need to find common ground to expand access to affordable contraception, accurate health information and preventive services.
