PROSSER, Wash.-- A Prosser man is dead after his car plunges into a canal. 25-year-old Jose Miguel Arias Martinez was driving along District Line Road in Prosser, near Benton City, when his car went off the road near a sharp curve and into a canal.
Benton County Sheriff's Deputies say it happened last night or early this morning. They received a call about a fence that was broken around 8:00 a.m. Sunday. Rick Corson, the Benton County Coroner, says Martinez's body was found two miles down the canal at Chandler Dam Sunday afternoon.
Corson talked to Martinez's parents who say he left the house around 9:00 Saturday night. Deputies say it was foggy in that area last night, but it's not clear if the weather was a factor.
Corson says, "It's presumed to be an accident. In other words, an accidental drowning due to the vehicle entering the canal."
Corson says Martinez was driving a small white pick-up truck, which hasn't been found yet. Martinez is believed to have been alone when this happened, but the search for his car and any other possible passengers will resume Monday.
The man who owns the property on which this happened says this isn't the first time a car has gone into the canal off District Line Road at the same location.
