Man Dead After He Drives Car Into Canal in ProsserPosted: Updated:
PROSSER, Wash.-- A curb along District Line Road turned deadly for one man. It's where 25-year-old Jose Miguel Arias Martinez lost control of his truck.
More than 24 hours later the Black Ford F 150 was found along the Chandler canal.
"So what the bureau of reclamation is going to do, is they're going to gear up and drain the canal completely, and then they're going to bring a tow truck and pull it out like that," said Fancis Buck, with Columbia Basin Dive Rescue.
Jose's friends watched still in disbelief. One man was with him minutes before he left his house on the night of the accident.
"He said he was maybe going to a bar, I don't know, or to see his girlfriend," said Miguel Diaz, a co-worker.
Friends say he was a field worker at a hop farm in Prosser.
"I met him about 8 years ago, we met at the ranch, he was a good person, I picked him to be my daughter's godfather," said a family friend.
About a quarter mile down from where the truck went it, hand prints were visible along the sides.
Dive rescue staff say it's proof Jose was trying to climb out, but couldn't get a grip. For his friends it's a sign, Jose didn't try to take his own life.
"No, he had no reason to do that, I consider this an accident, it's simply something that could have happened to anyone," said his family friend.
Deputies say they think it was an accident and don't have any indication there was alcohol involved. The Benton County Coroner says an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
