Wife of Man Hit by Car on I-84 Opens UpPosted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR-- Nels Hadden's wife Betsy says her husband always stopped on the side of the road to help with a car accident.
"He's just always helping people," she says. "The day he helped this person, that's what he does."
46-year-old Nels Hadden of Milton-Freewater is still in critical condition two weeks after pulling off Interstate 84 near John Day River to help with one car accident, before being in the middle of another. Police are blaming the weather.
Nel's wife has literally been living at the hospital by her husband's side. She's already seen him through almost a dozen surgeries, his most recent Tuesday morning.
"I leave the hospital now at night to go sleep at a hotel, but we stay here all day," she tells us.
While the focus has always been on her husband's recovery, living out of a suitcase has been draining on his wife. To help her sort through this mess, she's turned to social networking sites, like Facebook, Where she can put her thoughts in writing.
"It's not very eloquent," she admits. "Usually I'm a decent speller and grammar person, but you just write and try to do the best you can. That's really helped a lot."
Hadden still faces another two to three surgeries, barring any further complications. But the family is taking it one day at a time, clinging onto any sign of hope.
"Today he moved his shoulder," Betsy says. "So not huge, but he moved it. That's a glorious day for us. Sunday he kissed me and I could feel his kiss and that was the best kiss in the whole wide world."
