Whitman College Mentor Program Brings Almost 200 Kids to Campus
WALLA WALLA, Wash-- It was all about grade school fun at Whitman College on Friday. Nearly 200 students from elementary and middle schools in Walla Walla went to Whitman for a carnival.
The fun was in celebration of the college's mentor program. Once a week the college students head to the elementary school at lunch and act as role models.
"We actually specifically make sure that the mentor program is not about disciplinary actions not about tutoring academically, it's about being a friend, it's about being a responsible consistent adult for the kid," said Amy Strauss.
The mentor program started as a thesis paper by a Senior at Whitman 15-years ago. There were only 20-students involved. Since then it has turned into an annual program with 172-students.
