Spokane Apartment fire forces almost 40 to evacuate
SPOKANE - Fire investigators are trying to figure out the cause of a fire that started at an apartment building on Monroe Street late Saturday night. Battalion Chief Mike Inman says the fire started in the living room of an apartment on the third floor of the building at about 11:30 p.m.
Fire crews responded to the scene and found heavy smoke in the building. Just under 40 people live there, and everyone evacuated safely. Fire crews shut off the gas line to the building and decided not to turn it back on until Sunday morning. Therefore, no one was allowed to return to the apartment building Saturday night. The American Red Cross helped 10 families find accommodations for the night and provided food the following morning..
Fire officials say the damage was contained to one apartment.
