KENNEWICK, Wash.-- The 2008 Kennewick Man and Woman of the Year were announced Monday night.
Hank Sauer is the new Man of the Year, and Sandy Owen is the new Woman of the Year.
These honors have been given out since the 1940s and have always been given to men and women who are very involved in the community and exemplify exceptional community service.
Sauer, a former teacher, administrator, and coach and current president of the Kiwanis club, was recognized for his dedication to education and the community. Owen, who works with the health district and Kennewick schools was honored for her involvement in education and commitment to public safety.
Neither knew they were getting the award, but both had similar reactions. Owen said, "I'm overwhelmed and surprised. I really was shocked tonight. I really had no idea." Sauer described feeling, "overwhelmed, really overwhelmed," and said, "I was not expecting this at all."
Sauer comes to the awards every year and couldn't believe he actually won. Owen was on vacation and had to be told an elaborate story to get her to leave and come to the awards tonight.
Sauer's the 64th Kennewick Man of the Year and Owen's the 62nd Kennewick Woman of the Year.
