Men: Cougs Beat Ducks, Women: Begin Play Tonight

Baynes leads Cougars past Ducks 62-40
      
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Aron Baynes scored 14 of his 20 points in the
first half, and Washington State never trailed in beating Oregon
62-40 last night in Los Angeles in a first-round game of the Pac-10
basketball tournament.

The 6-foot-10 senior from Australia shot 7-of-8 from the field,
6-of-6 from the foul line and grabbed eight rebounds before leaving
the game for good with 5:57 remaining and the Cougars leading
56-37.

The win was the fourth in the last five games for Washington
State (17-14), which faces No. 15 UCLA (24-7) tonight in the
quarterfinals. The teams split their two games this season.

Tajuan Porter scored 20 points for 10th-seeded Oregon.
         
UW, WSU open Pac-10 women's basketball tournament play

      
LOS ANGELES (AP) - The four-day Pac-10 women's basketball
tournament gets under way tonight at the Galen Center on the
Southern California campus in Los Angeles, with both Washington and
Washington State scheduled to play.

No. 10 seed Washington (7-21, 3-15) takes on No. 7 Oregon (9-20,
5-13) at 6, while No. 8 Washington State (11-18, 4-14) goes against
No. 9 Arizona (11-18, 4-14) at 8:15.

Top-seeded Stanford (26-4, 17-1) has won nine consecutive Pac-10
regular-season titles and comes into the tournament with a 13-game
winning streak.

In quarterfinal games tomorrow, No. 3 Arizona State meets No. 6
USC at 11 a.m., No. 2 California plays the winner of the
Washington-Oregon game at 1:15 p.m., Stanford goes against the
winner of the Washington State-Arizona game at 5 p.m. and No. 4
UCLA plays No. 5 Oregon State at 7:15 p.m.

The semifinals will be played Saturday night at 6 and 8:30, and
the championship will be decided Sunday night at 6.
