Bill Expanding Rights For Same Sex Unions Passes Senate
YAKIMA--The state Senate passes a bill expanding rights for same sex partners, thanks to some local backing.
Senator Curtis King (Republican, Yakima) voted for the bill, and 13th district Representative Norm Johnson said he will vote for it when it hits the House of Representatives.
Reverend Jane Newall of the Rainbow Church in Yakima thinks more couples will take advantage of the added rights if the bill passes.
"The first time the domestic partnership bill was passed, it was very very limited in terms of what kind of rights and responsibilities it would grant," Newall said. "The expansion of [rights] may lead more people to see that as a benefit to their families."
The State House of Representatives will vote on the bill next month.
