Big Changes in the Works for South Union Gap Exit

UNION GAP, Wash.-- The city of Union Gap and the Department of Transportation have some major plans for the Interstate 82 exit at the south end of town.

They're drawing up plans for a new road off the exit that would eventually connect with Ahtanum Road and Valley Mall Boulevard near Costco.

The changes are designed to help reduce semi truck traffic on Main Street, making it less busy and safer for other drivers.

However, the DOT says it's a tricky area to build in.

"Got several creeks that come together right next to the Yakima River, you got the park there, so makes it really difficult to try and go in and not impact anyone," said Brian White with the Washington State Department of Transportation

Both parties are also hoping to create a new ramp from the I-82 exit to Main Street.

It's the last highway connection that doesn't exist at the exit.

Union Gap is currently working to secure money for the improvements.
