Researching biofuel for Hydroplanes

RICHLAND, Wash. -- Hydroplanes use a lot of fuel, and for a few years now, research has been underway to convert the boats to green energy, by using bio fuel. It is technology that is expected to be used by all hydros next year

Senator Maria Cantwell is turning the attention to aviation bio fuels. Some options were discussed Thursday at a meeting at the nation's capitol. Here in the Tri-Cities, scientists at PNNL have been researching the the technology for the last six years. They are looking more into jet fuel and have focused at least 95% of their attention for two reasons: 1) a large military presence. 2) Washington's large aviation background (from airports to plane manufacturers).

Researchers say they expect bio fuel technology to be used on planes within the next five years.
