PASCO, WA - Franklin PUD wants to warn customers of a telephone scam that appears to be targeting Hispanic businesses in Pasco.
Franklin PUD says for the last ten months, particularly on Fridays, businesses have been receiving fake collection calls from people claiming to work for the PUD. The callers say customers are past due on their electric bills, and that if they don't pay within 30 minutes, the PUD has a truck standing by that will shut off their power. Franklin PUD says these calls are not legitimate.
The utility company wants to remind customers that scams can be easily committed over the phone. Any suspicious activity like this should be reported to Franklin PUD and your local police department.
Franklin PUD does make courtesy collection calls, but only after customers have received a "late bill payment due" notice in their monthly statement. Customers can offer to pay Franklin PUD at that time over the phone, but the company does not solicit customers by phone just for payment. If customers do make a payment by phone, Franklin PUD gives them a confirmation code.
If customers are unsure if a call actually is from Franklin PUD, they should hang up and call Franklin PUD customer service at 509-547-5591.
The PUD says it wants to make customers aware of potential scams so they can protect themselves from becoming victims of identity theft and other fraudulent activities.
