YAKIMA, WA – On Wednesday, the United States Marshals Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force (PNVOTF) was working in Yakima trying to locate and arrest 41-year-old Elijio Mendoza. Mendoza was wanted by the Washington State Department of Corrections (WDOC) for Failure to Report. He is a known gang affiliate, who is classified as a High Violent Offender.
The PNVOTF had surveillance of a house in south Yakima and tried to arrest Mendoza. He tried to drive away but was stopped by PNVOTF emergency equipment. Mendoza accelerated his vehicle and placed a PNVOTF team member in danger, causing another team member to fire into the vehicle, striking Mendoza.
PNVOTF members provided life-saving trauma care to Mendoza. Local law enforcement and EMS arrived on scene and Mendoza was taken to a local area hospital where he underwent surgery, and is currently in stable condition.
The Yakima Police Department is investigating the incident.
