Scientists: Magma Recharging Mount St. Helens

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) - A pilot observed light volcanic ash in the air Thursday near Mount St. Helens.

The Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver says there is no eruptive activity at the mountain.

A spokeswoman, Carolyn Driedger, said Friday the ash was kicked up by high winds - a common phenomenon at St. Helens, Mount Hood and Mount Rainier in late summer and fall when the snowpack has melted and the ground is dry.
