Wishes Coming True For Girl In West Richland

WEST RICHLAND, Wash- Miette Nelson is a six year-old cancer survivor. She's a little camera shy, but strong. After never ending amounts of treatments and doctor appointments, Sunday was her day to put all that aside and live a dream.

"Miette obviously went though the brunt of the treatment, but everybody had cancer," explained her mother Lisa. Her entire family felt the impact and the struggle of fighting a deadly disease.

Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation the little cancer survivor's wishes came true. Miette's party was off to a roaring start when she got to ride in a shiny blue Corvette of her choosing. Next stop was Barracuda Coffee where she ran the business from behind the counter.

"A wish can't be a wish if it doesn't represent the child," said Leslie Woodfill, the Regional Co-Director from Make-A-Wish. The foundation made sure that the wish granted was personal and exactly what Miette wanted.

"Whenever Miette had cancer she'd say ‘I like having cancer because we get to go places we never go'" said her mother.

She'll get to go everywhere now in her new refurbished camping trailer. Decorated in her style with lots of pink it even has a special cage for her pet Guinea Pig named Tina Turner. The family will have a great time on their cross-country trip, but it's hard for them to forget other families who are still going through what they've survived.

"I'm thinking about this and at the same time, we have a little friend who just passed away after three moths with leukemia," said her mom.

The family says they're lucky to have the support they do. Miette's friends even shaved their heads with her when she lost her hair.

"It felt good to support her that way," said Miette's neighborhood friend.

"I know that there are families going through this that don't have family support and I frankly don't know how they are putting one foot in front of the other," said Miette's mom.

Granting this girl's wish is just the beginning of Wish Week here in the Tri-Cities. There will be various events to raise funds for the foundation throughout the week, ending with their Corvettes On The Columbia weekend this Saturday and Sunday.
