Yakima job fair trying to help curb veteran unemployment

YAKIMA, Wash.-- Hundreds of local veterans turned out for a job and resource fair in Yakima Thursday.

There were over 45 booths with companies ready to hire both veterans and active National Guard members.

In Washington, the average unemployment rate for veterans is just under 9%, so many current and retired service members say these fairs are crucial.

"I like it. It's good to see a lot of people come out and want to hire guard members and veterans, service members. It's nice to see that support," said Angela Lord, an active National Guard member looking for work.

Organizers say more and more companies are starting to hire vets too. There's even a work opportunity tax credit employers can take advantage of if they hire retired military.
