The Mid-Columbia Mastersingers will present their annual concert celebrating the music of Latin America in a program combining elements of two popular holiday observances, the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols from England and Las Posadas from Mexico.
The concert program entitled “Noche de Paz,” or “Night of Peace” will feature the Mastersingers Youth (MY) Choirs and the MCM Chamber Choir.
The traditional English Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is a church service celebrated on Christmas Eve. Nine short Bible readings telling the story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus, are interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols, hymns and choir anthems.
The Mexican tradition of Las Posadas is a nine-day festival at Christmas, with a procession each night that represents Joseph and Mary searching for lodging for Jesus’ birth. People may dress up as the characters, including angels and shepherds, and certain houses or a church are designated as the posada or inn, and the visiting procession is welcomed each night with carols, piñatas, and a feast.
The Mid-Columbia Mastersingers Noche de Paz concerts will incorporate the festive elements of these celebrations, with carols, anthems, and readings in English and Spanish.
