COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. - Residents of College Place and Walla Walla learned more about a Level 3 Sex Offender who just recently moved to their area.
58 year old Joseph Aqui spent 20 years in prison for a series of rapes, assaults and burglaries in Bellevue, Walla Walla and Tacoma between 1970-1973. KNDU checked Aqui's records and found out no rapes took place in Walla Walla.
He is the first man to be released from the Special Commitment Center on McNeil Island. Aqui was released from community custody last year, with no restrictions other than to register as a sex offender and now he's moving back to his hometown of College Place. Thursday night residents throughout the area met with the College Place Police Department to learn more about the level three sex offender.
"I have 7 grandchildren and some of them live in the College Place area and I just want to be aware of what his restrictions are because I've been following this guy since day 1," said Leona Standage, Walla Wall Resident.
"I don't think it's usually about instilling fear, it just about making people aware and taking precautions," said Elizabeth Brochu, College Place Resident.
Aqui will be living on the 1000th block of SE Birch Avenue. He's also not wanted at this time.
Police say their goal is not to scare people, but to make people more aware of their surroundings.
