YAKIMA, Wa -  Governor Gregoire says she wants to postpone the math requirement for high school graduation to avoid demoralizing students.

About half the tenth graders in the state who took the Math WASL failed to pass.

The governor is concerned that many students might decide to drop out before the requirement takes effect in two years. She's proposed pushing the requirement back another three years. Math teachers in the valley agree with her.

"It also at the state level gives them more time to put together intervention materials that are not in place yet, says Kristen Maxwell, a math coach at AC Davis High School, "So incoming freshman who are in high school next year will intervention materials in place so that they can be successful."

There are 14 school districts with high schools in our viewing area.  Only two have more than half their tenth graders passing the WASL's math section.
