Memorial for Ryan Thompson

ELLENSBURG, WA (AP) - Hundreds of law enforcement officers from throughout the region have gathered for a memorial service for Kittitas County Deputy Sheriff Ryan Thompson, who was shot to death by a road rage suspect last week.

Thursday's service was held at Nicholson Pavilion on the campus of Central Washington University in Ellensburg and drew more than a thousand people.

Thompson, a graduate of the school, was shot to death during a gunbattle the evening of March 19 near Ellensburg. The suspect was also killed.

The 42-year-old Thompson graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1995. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Wounded in the gunbattle was Benito Chavez, a 22-year old police officer from the town of Kittitas. He has been released from a Seattle hospital.
